The Indian agricultural system is passing through a critical phase. Even after more than seven decades of Independence, the condition of farmers is a cause for concern for the government. It is a fact that since independence, agricultural production has increased manifold, but as far as farmers’ income is concerned, it is either stagnant or has recorded insignificant increase. The farmers are in distress and their miserable condition has compelled them to stage protests against the government’s policy. Time has come for a paradigm shift in agricultural strategy from an increase in production alone to an increase in farmers’ income.
Keeping the above-mentioned facts in mind, the Prime Minister’s 7-Point Programme has been announced to mitigate the situation. The Prime Minister’s initiative can prove a silver lining in dark cloud, provided these policies are implemented in a proper way.
The book elaborates on each and every aspect of farmers’ condition and government’s policies in this regard. This book is a useful guide for the students of Agriculture, research scholars as well as professionals working in the agriculture sector. Besides, it can also be used as reference book.
Dr. S.D. Chamola retired as Professor of Economics and Business Management from Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. Presently, he is working as an independent researcher based in Hisar (Haryana).
