To say that Indian democracy is undergoing drastic changes is to state the obvious. These transformations have made ideology redundant; politics the art of the possible; electoral outcome a product of manipulation of popular sentiments/ weaknesses/primordial loyalty; representation a question of sending professional politicians to the Parliament and State Assemblies without any possibility that the promises made by the political parties during election times be fulfilled; and democracy a mere caricature.

The political turn-around in Indian politics consequent on the emergence of Hindutva and the impact it has on civil society and the secular ethos of the country, and the progressive expansion of techno-capitalist corporate enterprises and people’s struggles for survival add density to these transformation. This book is a scholarly attempt at grappling with this changed context against which Indian politics rises and falls, and the state and civil society structure their relationship.
